Labour Assistance

Unfair Labour Practices, Dismissals and Retrenchments — we provide professional advice and representation at Conciliation, Arbitration, Labour Court and Labour Appeal Court at no additional cost.

  • Assistance with disputes on Collective Agreement contraventions by employers.
  • Representation at disciplinary hearings and grievance processes.
  • 100% of all amounts obtained through settlement negotiations and/or awards are paid to the respective member(s).

Collective Bargaining

Members enjoy the focused approach of a well-versed collective bargaining team representing members' interests in wages and conditions of employment.

  • MISA is party to MIBCO and represents members on all forums, both regionally and nationally.
  • This benefit is not available to Affiliate members.

Death & Funeral Benefits

MISA provides comprehensive funeral and death cover to ensure your family is protected during difficult times.

MISA Death and Funeral Benefit

All active MISA members and dependants qualify for funeral benefits, subject to 4 weeks' contributions. Payments are made directly to the nominated beneficiary and do not become assets in the deceased person's estate.

  • Children over 18 who are registered full-time students or physically/mentally disabled qualify from R11 000.
  • Death benefit subject to 26 weeks' consecutive contributions.
  • In the event of suicide, 104 weeks' contributions must have been received.

SAF Benefit

All employees at RMI establishments belonging to the Sick, Accident and Maternity Pay Fund (SAF) qualify for additional death and funeral benefits.

  • MISA members belonging to SAF: Death and funeral benefit of R90 000 (main member only).
  • Non-MISA members belonging to SAF at RMI establishments: R30 000.
  • Members must complete the SAF Employee Benefit Fund Registration Form to qualify.

Extended Family Cover Benefit

In addition to your existing MISA Benefit & Funeral Fund, members on the Gold & Silver membership option can apply for additional funeral cover for extended family members.

  • Gold Option: Register up to 6 family members.
  • Silver Option: Register up to 3 family members.
  • Subject to 26 weeks' consecutive contributions (104 weeks in case of suicide).

Financial Relief Benefits

MISA offers critical financial support during challenging times — from retrenchment to illness and short-time.

Retrenchment Benefit — R3 000

A retrenchment benefit to ease the financial burden of job loss.

  • Payable subject to 26 weeks' consecutive contributions.
  • Application must be made within 13 weeks from date of retrenchment.
  • Member must be officially retrenched (not dismissed or resigned).

Short-Time Benefit — R3 000

Financial support for members employed on short-time (less than 23 hours per week) for at least 8 consecutive weeks.

  • Must result from unforeseen contingency and/or circumstances beyond the employer's control.
  • Members must notify MISA immediately upon receipt of short-time notice.
  • Claims must be submitted with proof within 13 weeks of the employer notifying MIBCO.
  • Not available to Affiliate or Associated members.

Ill-Health / Disability Benefit — R3 000

Financial support for members in the event of illness or disability.

  • Payable subject to 26 weeks' consecutive contributions.
  • Application must be made within 13 weeks from date of approval by the Retirement Fund.

Contingency Reserve Fund

This Fund is administered by MIBCO and provides financial support regarding Outstanding Retirement Contributions, Outstanding Salary, Additional Holiday Pay (AHP), Leave Pay & Notice Pay in the event of the liquidation of their employers' businesses.

  • Not available to Affiliate members.

Family Benefits

MISA supports our members during life's most important moments — from the birth of a child to growing your family.

Maternity Benefit — R3 000

A maternity benefit to supplement income during maternity leave.

  • Payable subject to 26 weeks' consecutive contributions.
  • Application must be made within 17 weeks from date of birth.
  • Requires birth certificate or hospital record.

Parental Benefit — R1 000

A parental benefit available to members to support bonding time with a newborn child.

  • Available to 1 000 members annually on a first-come-first-serve basis.
  • Subject to 26 weeks' consecutive contributions.
  • Application must be made within 17 weeks from date of birth.

Health & Wellness Benefits

Prevention is better than cure. MISA encourages proactive health management and rewards members who look after their wellbeing.

Healthy MISA Member Benefit — R3 000

MISA rewards members who actively manage their health and maintain good attendance.

  • Available to 600 eligible members per annum who were off sick for 2 days or less (1 Jan – 31 Dec).
  • Must have attended at least one medical examination or participated in a wellness campaign during the year.
  • Claims submitted from 1 January the following year, for 13 weeks on a first-come-first-served basis.
  • Subject to 26 weeks' consecutive contributions.

Healthy MISA Women Benefit — R3 000

MISA rewards female members who attend to preventative health screenings.

  • Available to 600 eligible female members per annum.
  • Must have completed a mammogram or pap smear during 1 January to 31 December.
  • Claims submitted from 1 January the following year, for 13 weeks on a first-come-first-served basis.
  • Subject to 26 weeks' consecutive contributions.

Loyalty Benefit — R1 000

MISA rewards long-standing members for their continued loyalty.

  • Available to 8 000 members annually.
  • Subject to 104 consecutive weeks' contributions as at 30 November annually.
  • Claims can only be submitted from 1 January to 31 March.

Education & Training

MISA invests in our members' growth — from school support to tertiary bursaries and professional soft skills training.

School Support Benefit — R1 500

3 000 School Support Benefits are offered annually to qualifying members with children in school.

  • For members with children registered in Grades 1 to 12.
  • Claims can be submitted from 1 January for a period of 13 weeks (first-come-first-served).
  • Limited to a maximum of 2 claims per family.
  • Subject to 26 weeks' consecutive contributions.

Bursary Fund — R12 500

The Bursary Fund helps fund tertiary studies of members' children.

  • 150 bursaries of R12 500 each are offered annually.
  • Subject to specified criteria.

Study Assistance Programme — R12 500

The Study Assistance Programme gives members the opportunity to further their own tertiary studies.

  • 150 members per annum can access up to R12 500 study assistance.
  • Studies must be through a recognised and/or duly registered institution.
  • Subject to specified criteria.

Educated Members Programme — R1 000

Assists eligible members in obtaining a Matric or Matric equivalent qualification.

  • 300 eligible members can benefit between 1 January and 31 December.
  • R1 000 benefit per qualifying member.
  • Subject to specified criteria.

Soft Skills Training

Better equip yourself with professional training — included in your monthly membership contribution.

  • Members qualify for up to 3 training interventions per year.
  • Courses include: Telephone Etiquette, Health & Safety, First Aid, Receptionist Training, Employment Equity Committee Training, Microsoft Office, Customer Service, Business Presentation Skills and Time Management.

Beyond financial benefits, MISA provides valuable additional services to support our members in every aspect of life.

Last Will & Testament / Living Will

MISA provides members with the drawing up of a Last Will and Testament and/or Living Will at no additional cost.

  • If MISA is appointed as Executor of the Estate, reduced fees apply:
  • 3% on the value of your estate.
  • 5% on any income generated by your estate.

Domestic Workers: Service Contracts

MISA can prepare a service contract for your domestic worker at no additional cost.

  • Sets out terms and conditions of employment in line with the Basic Conditions of Employment Act 75 of 1997.

Nedbank Private Wealth Retirement Option

An exclusive retirement investment solution developed for MISA members by Nedbank Private Wealth.

  • Normal minimum investment: R1 000 000 — MISA members can invest from R500 000.
  • Aimed at members aged 55 and older (younger members with minimum amount also qualify).
